The Mill Springs Battlefield can now add a love story to its roster.
In November, the estate of Doris Hill donated a 19th century painting to the MSBA. The painting is of Captain Scott of the who was stationed in Somerset at the Fox House before the Battle of Mill Springs. It was at this time that he met "Aunt Nette". The two pursued a courtship, exchanged letters and, according to the family, "Aunt Nette" was madly in love with Capt. Scott. After the Battle of Mill Springs the two continued to exchange letters, until "Aunt Nette's" heart was broken one day when she found out that Captain Scott was married and had a family in Ohio. Family accounts say that "Aunt Nette" was so devastated by the news that she resolved to become a recluse and never found love again.
Though this love story did not have a happy ending, unfortunately there were many similar cases that happened in various other parts of the country during the Civil War. This portrait was said to have been commissioned by her father during the time of their courtship. The artist is unknown. The painting is in desperate need of conservation and the MSBA is currently working on gathering information on conservation costs and fundraising efforts. The plan is to display the portrait in the Museum along with reproductions of the "love letters" and information on the Fox House. |
